Happy New Year

Hello everyone,

.

A very happy new year to you all. Hopefully you all had a good time over the holidays. I’ve only just got around to writing this as it’s been a busy period for us, split between heading off to various parts of the UK to visit family, lying down embracing unconsciousness and recording.

.

2011 passed by in a flash. I can’t believe 12 months have elapsed. I’d like to thank, on behalf of the four of us, everyone who came to see us, gave us a floor to sleep on/a room to sleep in, bought our records, put us on at their nights/venues, had us on their radio shows, played us on the radio, played on their podcast, interviewed us, wrote about us, fed us, stocked our records, released our records and in anyway helped us out in 2011. It was a crazy year. We’ve travelled further afield than we ever have before and we’ve played to more people than any other year. We’ve played to some incredible crowds. It’s been wonderful to have had the opportunity to travel to the USA, and playing in New York and at SxSW were a delight. We’ve met some amazing people on our travels and it’s been great to chat to so many of you after shows. I fulfilled a dream that I’ve had since I was 10 and held in my hands a copy of our debut record Shouting at Wildlife pressed on vinyl. We’ve Fence Records to thank for that, amongst many other things. Thank you Johnny Lynch, and thank you Kenny Anderson. They’ve provided an incredible amount of support since we joined the Fence stable back in February. The King Creosote and Kid Canaveral tour was the best tour I have ever been on. It’s been a real pleasure collaborating with Kenny, as well. I hope we can do it again ;)

.

Thank you to everyone who came to our second Christmas Baubles. Thank you to The Pictish Trail, eagleowl, Sweet Baboo, Aidan Moffat, Martin John Henry, Josie Long, Standard Fare and Slow Club for outstanding performances, one and all. Thank you to all our volunteers who staffed the bar and guided folk around the beautiful Summerhall. I think we might have to do it again.

.

We’ve toured the arse off of our first album, and rather than sensibly take some time off, we’ve been in the studio in between Christmas and New Year getting thoroughly stuck into our second record. So far, we’ve all but finished two new songs ‘The Wrench’ (which we’ve been playing live for a few months) and ‘Low Winter Sun’. I know people always say this, but I think it’s the best stuff we’ve done to date. I know, I know, I’ll drop in another cliché or two before this is done. We’re working again with Gal, the very talented fellow who recorded our first album, and we’ll be fitting in as many album sessions with him as possible in the next few months. It’s a real joy to be recording again. We’ve another track recorded that is currently without vocals and a couple of songs in rough demo form. One of them is certainly for dancing.

.

We’re going to take a few months off from shows to focus on getting the album mostly finished and more new songs rehearsed before we head back out on the road. We’ll be going on tour in the late Spring to promote a new release (not an album) and Album #2 will be out some time in the last 1/3 of 2012 (as long as no disasters befall us). I’ll appear with occasional studio blogs over the next few months to tell you facts about compression and microphone positions (that I’ll have to get Gal to write down for me, verbatim) and other such nuggets of studio magic. The blog looks a bit sparse on here. I might pop up the SxSW blogs we did for The Skinny. Perhaps a resolution to blog more? To get better at the keyboard, anyway. Talk less shite? I’m away before this gets any schmaltzier.

.
In summary:

1. Yas!

2. Thank you

3. New album

.

All the best for 2012. Lang may yer lum reek.

Autumn Tour Dates with King Creosote & Standard Fare

Hello everyone,

>

First off, thanks to everyone who’s come out to see, listened to us on the radio, written nice things about us, played us on the radio, tweeted at us, liked us on Facebook,  and generally been lovely to us in the last few months. It has officially been our best summer ever and we have you all to thank for making it so awesome. T in the Park, Belladrum, The Liquid Room, Haarfest… I could definitely go on but suffice to say it has all been brilliant and even the karaoke/jägerbomb debacle in Wick was, ummmm, character building??

>

If you hadn’t already noticed we have no intention of resting on our laurels and have an action packed Autumn and Winter planned too – a 7 date tour with the mighty King Creosote being one of the highlights!! We are very, very, very excited indeed. We obviously want you to be well prepared so I have created a handy wee list of all our gigs and where to buy tickets for them. Lucky you, eh?

And Another Tour

Headlining the Seedlings Stage, Belladrum 2011. Image Copyright Al Donnelly

Hello everyone,
>

Hopefully this will find you well. Just a wee post to let you know what we’ll be up to in the coming months.

First of all, thank you to everyone who has come to see us recently! We’ve been very busy and the response has been incredible. Playing the BBC Introducing Stage at T in the Park, and at Belladrum have been rather special things indeed. Not to mention the Avalanche instore for the re-issue of our album on Fence Records. Also a massive thanks for the support from Tom Morton (who made us his album of the week on his BBC Scotland Show), Vic Galloway (for the same reason, not to mention his constant support),  to Huw Stephens for countless plays on his Radio 1 shows recently, to Josie Long and Andrews Collins, and Gideon Coe for airplay on their BBC 6Music shows  and to Gill Mills and Jim Gellatly for inclusion in their Amazing Radio playlists. We’ve filmed a Song, By Toad session that will be up in the coming months, too. We recently recorded a live, acoustic session and interview with Marion Scott for broadcast on Moray Firth Radio. That was just meant to be a wee update/couple of “Ta very much”es and it’s turned into an EFFING OSCAR SPEECH. I’m sorry. We really do appreciate it all. It’s been a bloody great year so far.

Footage and photographs of our set at T in the Park can be found here.

T in the Park 2011

Second of all, we’re playing at the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh on Sunday 14th August with Over the Wall and Admiral Fallow as part of The EDge Festival. Tickets for this show are close to selling out, so if you want a ticket, it’d be wise to get one here, now.

>

We’re off on tour with King Creosote in October/November to support the release of a double A-side single with the man himself, details of which will be revealed soon. We’ll be the support act for all of these shows, but will also be Kenny’s band for the 28th & 29th. Shows confirmed so far, are:

28th Oct Ceilidh Place, Ullapool
29th Oct Ironworks, Inverness
30th Oct TBA
31st Oct  The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen
1st Nov   The Cluny, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
2nd Nov Liquid Rooms, Edinburgh
3rd Nov  Doghouse, Dundee
4th Nov  Woodend Barn, Banchory

>

After these shows we’ll be playing a number of Scottish and English dates to be announced soon.

>

IF you haven’t already got it you can buy our new-released vinyl from the shop here. It’s rather beautiful. Every one comes with a CD of the album so you can be dead modern etc.  http://www.kidcanaveral.co.uk/home/shop

>

We’ll be posting more news about shows and releases as soon as we can. Keep an eye on our ‘Live’ page for info on upcoming shows. We’ve got our first Glasgow and London shows for a while listed over here.

>

Hope you’re all well.

Hello everyone

We’re going to be featured in the ‘Scotland Rocks at SxSW’ documentary on BBC 2 Scotland (SKY Channel 990 elsewhere in the UK), tonight at 9pm.

You can watch a wee clip of it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00hvq0n

As well as some stuff with us, it features King Creosote, Withered Hand,  Bronto Skylift, Edwyn Collins, Rachel Sermanni, Unicorn Kid, The Twilight Sad, and interviews with The Proclaimers, KT Tunstall, Glasvegas and Franz Ferdinand.

Please be nice about my sunburnt face. As in: don’t mention it.

Happy watching!

05.09.11 FENCE PRESENTS: FOUND + Kid Canaveral + The Pictish Trail (DJ) + special guest at The Wilmington Arms, London

Straight from the desk of our record label:

Venue: The Wilmington Arms
Address: LONDON UK EC1R 4RL
Doors: 19.30
Tickets: £8.50 adv. (inc. P & P)

FENCE RECORDS PRESENTS: FOUND + Kid Canaveral + The Pictish Trail (DJ set) + more

On Monday, September 5th, we’re putting on a special Fence Records show in London.

Now that our favourite London venue, The Luminaire, has closed, we’re going to start using a place called The Wilmington Arms – which is located in Clerkenwell, just over the road from Exmouth Market. It’s a braw pub that serves good food, nice selection of beer, and has a great wee venue next door. Perfect.

So, aye – this show will feature co-headline performances from FOUND and Kid Canaveral.

FOUND hardly need any introduction – they’re brand of experimental electronic schizoid-pop has been a staple at Fence events since the release of their second album, This Mess We Keep Reshaping. 2011 has been a big year for Tommy, Ziggy & Kev – their current album, factorycraft, came out in spring on Glasgow’s legendary Chemikal Underground label … and the summer has seen the boys hone their live skills with a slew of live dates and festivals slots under their belts. As well as a few dodgy festival curries, no doubt.

Before FOUND take to the stage, Kid Canaveral will have got everyone sweating their cardigans off. Our Edinburgh-based indie-poppers are experts at this sort of thing. We’re about to release the vinyl repressing of their fantastic debut album SHOUTING At Wildlife - so make sure you pre-order this now, so that you can sing along come September.

I’ll be DJ’ing between/after acts as The Pictish Trail … and there’s another special guest still to be announced.

Doors are at 19.30, with live music finishing by 22.30, and the place open until 23.00. Tickets are £8.50 advance / £10 on the door. There’s no postage charge, as all tickets will be kept under your name on the door.

It’s not a massive venue – so we suggest purchasing tickets now to avoid tantrums!

Feeling Festive and Shouting at Vinyl

Stag and Dagger Festival May 2011 Copyright Claire Thomson 2011

Hello everyone!

Hopefully this finds you well.

We have a new single, an exciting Vinyl pressing of our album and some festival shows to tell you about!
Our next single is a radio edit of ‘And Another Thing!!’ which will be available from all major download stores from 11th July 2011.This digital version will be backed with a FOUND remix of ‘And Another Thing!!’ and we can tell you now, it’s really rather brilliant.

You can also get a very, very limited edition Cassette Single of ‘And Another Thing!!’ when you pre-order ‘Shouting at Wildlife’, which is being re-released on Vinyl (with CD) on Fence Records on Monday 25th July 2011.  On the flip of the tape there’s a cover of King Creosote’s ‘Missionary’. The track features an accordion intro & solo, as well as backing vocals, from Fence label boss, King Kenny Anderson himself. You can pre-order the vinyl bundle from here.

That’s pretty exciting, no?

We’re also going to be appearing on BBC 2 at 9pm on Tuesday 5th July as part of the BBC Artworks documentary following some of the Scottish artists who appeared at
the 2011 SxSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. A wee clip of this can be seen here.

Next up: this year’s Fence Records Homegame Festival depicted in moving images by the very talented Forest of Black (who created the the beautiful Away Game video) and soundtracked by Kid Canaveral.

Homegame … HomeGame … Home Game!

Kid Canaveral Homegame 2011

Hello friends!
-
Kate Canaveral here. It’s been a flippin’ amazing few weeks for us and we’ve still not really recovered from any of it but I’m going to attempt to fill you all in. Here goes...
-
First up, our first show since returning from SXSW – the Bunfight at the OK Karail. King Creosote’s Homegame warm up in his hometown of Crail. There was a lovely atmosphere in the beautiful Crail town hall and cheers to everyone for sticking around til the end for our set. We did a half an hour of Kid C songs before being joined by Mr Anderson for a wee taster of our set from South by South West. David completely nailed the Bootprints solo (it was awesome and ridiculous) and we gave everyone a wee preview of what will hopefully be a forthcoming single, Homerun and A Vow – A King C/Kid C collaboration.
-
Then a couple of top nights in Edinburgh and Glasgow at the end of April. A complete blast from the past to play at Henry’s Cellar Bar again but it was a fun night with a super attentive audience. Evening was topped off nicely with homemade curry and beers at Song, By Toad HQ after! Next up, the Captain’s Rest in Glasgow for their Third Birthday Weekender. We were on last on the Sunday night and I was a tiny bit worried that after two days of non-stop music people might be a bit jaded. WRONG. Big, appreciative crowd. Thanks y’all.
-
Now to the big one. As most of you will know we’ve been involved with Fence Records’ Homegame Festival (someone changed it to two words this year but I am refusing to budge, curse you Pictish....!) for the last few years. We’ve done everything from pulling pints, shifting gear, manning doors and chauffeuring VIPs (Gummi Bako’s very demanding donchaknow), as well as of course playing a set every year. This year was our first as official Fence Records signings so obviously we were expecting the special treatment...  HA! David sweated his body weight pulling pints and changing kegs on the bar on Friday night. Rose’s glass collecting saved the day and I even had to chuck Scott out of my house on Saturday night to make way for more musicians. Sorry Scott! As usual, I ran around like a headless chicken all weekend (apparently this outwardly came across as “relaxed”, hooray!) looking for lost snare stands, performers, sound engineers (almost all were found in the queue for the fish n chip shop by the way). But joking aside – we absolutely love helping out because Homegame is simply the best weekend of the year. It always is. Johnny (and Kenny) do an amazing job and I think this year’s may have been the best yet. I didn’t see one duff performance the entire weekend and the atmosphere was the most chilled out it’s ever been. Personal highlights - Cancel The Astronauts, Slow Club and Randolph’s Leap. Francois and the Atlas Mountains may have been the best gig I’ve ever seen ever. I’m  not ashamed to say that Laura Doherty and I screamed like teenage super fans at the impromptu frenchified Purple Rain encore! He’s just signed to Domino Records so be sure to check him out.
-
Oh yeah... and we may just have played our best gig EVER too. Saturday night, 600 people packed into the Anstruther Town Hall. It was just ace. And so much fun! We’re really appreciative to all those who came up to us afterwards and said what a good time they had and how happy it had made them. It was a complete riot – special thanks should go to the Fisher & Donaldson dance crew for getting everyone going. The set was not without its technical faults but I think we covered it with our massive, massive grins!! Not even special guest King Creosote’s clever knack of starting songs in the wrong place or before we’re ready could deter us. He does it on purpose I swear...! Most importantly a massive thank you to the wonderful Mikey Morrison of one of our fave bands (RIP), Come On Gang!, who played some killer guitar on a few tunes with us this year. One practice and a broken string and he still managed to be completely awesome. Good job Mikey.  The Wildlife Choir were ably represented by Laura “DoHo” Doherty who’d flown all the way from Toronto to be with us (it wasn’t for the family wedding the day before, honest).
-
So yeah - we were basically completely blown away by Homegame and it was the perfect way to kick off what we hope to be a brilliant summer. We are incredibly excited about the vinyl release of Shouting at Wildlife (due out in July on Fence) – David and I stood rooted to the spot in the Pictish Trail’s living room a couple of nights ago listening to the test pressings and you are not going to be disappointed. Vinyl rules! We should have more details of all this in the next week or so and we’ll be sure to keep you up to date. Thanks Johnny and Kenny and all the Fence crew for being continually supportive and inspiring. We love you guys.
-
In the mean time we’ve got three shows coming up. We’re chuffed to be playing Stag & Dagger this coming Saturday at Stereo in Glasgow – on the same bill as the mighty Allo Darlin’. It’s an early show with doors at 5pm and we’ll be on stage at 7.30pm sharp (details below). Then on Tuesday the 24th we’re thrilled to be back at the best indie club night in Edinburgh, Limbo at the Voodoo Rooms with The Lovely Eggs and Cancel The Astronauts. Advance tickets are cheaper so be sure to get them quick! Finally, we'll be back up north in Inverness for this year's GoNorth (9th-10th June). Time/Date/Venue TBC so we'll keep ya posted.
-
Right ... what a lot of words. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

So we’re going to the USA. We’ll actually, that’s a lie. We’re in New York already. We’re all sitting in the Cup and Saucer diner on the corner 0f Canal and Elridge in the Lower East Side of Manhattan waiting for breakfast.  But for the purposes of this, suspend your disbelief.

We’re playing a few shows in New York City, too. As well as our own gigs at SxSW, we’ll be doing three shows as King Creosote’s backing band. So no pressure there, then.
