Homegame … HomeGame … Home Game!

Kid Canaveral Homegame 2011

Hello friends!
-
Kate Canaveral here. It’s been a flippin’ amazing few weeks for us and we’ve still not really recovered from any of it but I’m going to attempt to fill you all in. Here goes...
-
First up, our first show since returning from SXSW – the Bunfight at the OK Karail. King Creosote’s Homegame warm up in his hometown of Crail. There was a lovely atmosphere in the beautiful Crail town hall and cheers to everyone for sticking around til the end for our set. We did a half an hour of Kid C songs before being joined by Mr Anderson for a wee taster of our set from South by South West. David completely nailed the Bootprints solo (it was awesome and ridiculous) and we gave everyone a wee preview of what will hopefully be a forthcoming single, Homerun and A Vow – A King C/Kid C collaboration.

Then a couple of top nights in Edinburgh and Glasgow at the end of April. A complete blast from the past to play at Henry’s Cellar Bar again but it was a fun night with a super attentive audience. Evening was topped off nicely with homemade curry and beers at Song, By Toad HQ after! Next up, the Captain’s Rest in Glasgow for their Third Birthday Weekender. We were on last on the Sunday night and I was a tiny bit worried that after two days of non-stop music people might be a bit jaded. WRONG. Big, appreciative crowd. Thanks y’all.

Now to the big one. As most of you will know we’ve been involved with Fence Records’ Homegame Festival (someone changed it to two words this year but I am refusing to budge, curse you Pictish....!) for the last few years. We’ve done everything from pulling pints, shifting gear, manning doors and chauffeuring VIPs (Gummi Bako’s very demanding donchaknow), as well as of course playing a set every year. This year was our first as official Fence Records signings so obviously we were expecting the special treatment...  HA! David sweated his body weight pulling pints and changing kegs on the bar on Friday night. Rose’s glass collecting saved the day and I even had to chuck Scott out of my house on Saturday night to make way for more musicians. Sorry Scott! As usual, I ran around like a headless chicken all weekend (apparently this outwardly came across as “relaxed”, hooray!) looking for lost snare stands, performers, sound engineers (almost all were found in the queue for the fish n chip shop by the way). But joking aside – we absolutely love helping out because Homegame is simply the best weekend of the year. It always is. Johnny (and Kenny) do an amazing job and I think this year’s may have been the best yet. I didn’t see one duff performance the entire weekend and the atmosphere was the most chilled out it’s ever been. Personal highlights - Cancel The Astronauts, Slow Club and Randolph’s Leap. Francois and the Atlas Mountains may have been the best gig I’ve ever seen ever. I’m  not ashamed to say that Laura Doherty and I screamed like teenage super fans at the impromptu frenchified Purple Rain encore! He’s just signed to Domino Records so be sure to check him out.

Oh yeah... and we may just have played our best gig EVER too. Saturday night, 600 people packed into the Anstruther Town Hall. It was just ace. And so much fun! We’re really appreciative to all those who came up to us afterwards and said what a good time they had and how happy it had made them. It was a complete riot – special thanks should go to the Fisher & Donaldson dance crew for getting everyone going. The set was not without its technical faults but I think we covered it with our massive, massive grins!! Not even special guest King Creosote’s clever knack of starting songs in the wrong place or before we’re ready could deter us. He does it on purpose I swear...! Most importantly a massive thank you to the wonderful Mikey Morrison of one of our fave bands (RIP), Come On Gang!, who played some killer guitar on a few tunes with us this year. One practice and a broken string and he still managed to be completely awesome. Good job Mikey.  The Wildlife Choir were ably represented by Laura “DoHo” Doherty who’d flown all the way from Toronto to be with us (it wasn’t for the family wedding the day before, honest).

So yeah - we were basically completely blown away by Homegame and it was the perfect way to kick off what we hope to be a brilliant summer. We are incredibly excited about the vinyl release of Shouting at Wildlife (due out in July on Fence) – David and I stood rooted to the spot in the Pictish Trail’s living room a couple of nights ago listening to the test pressings and you are not going to be disappointed. Vinyl rules! We should have more details of all this in the next week or so and we’ll be sure to keep you up to date. Thanks Johnny and Kenny and all the Fence crew for being continually supportive and inspiring. We love you guys.

In the mean time we’ve got three shows coming up. We’re chuffed to be playing Stag & Dagger this coming Saturday at Stereo in Glasgow – on the same bill as the mighty Allo Darlin’. It’s an early show with doors at 5pm and we’ll be on stage at 7.30pm sharp (details below). Then on Tuesday the 24th we’re thrilled to be back at the best indie club night in Edinburgh, Limbo at the Voodoo Rooms with The Lovely Eggs and Cancel The Astronauts. Advance tickets are cheaper so be sure to get them quick! Finally, we'll be back up north in Inverness for this year's GoNorth (9th-10th June). Time/Date/Venue TBC so we'll keep ya posted.
