Bio

Kid Canaveral are an alternative pop group based in Edinburgh, and the indiepop poster children of the Fence Records roster. The band – David MacGregor (Guitars & Voice), Kate Lazda (Guitars & Voice), Rose McConnachie (Bass Guitar & Voice) and Scott McMaster (Drumkit) – formed in St Andrews, and after releasing their debut 7″ single ‘Smash Hits’ on their own label Straight to Video Records in 2007, they self-released a further 4 singles, an EP and their debut album Shouting at Wildlife, before signing to Fence Records in 2011. This marriage of band and label followed an incredibly busy 2010 for the group, with their debut LP becoming a critical and word-of-mouth success seeing the original pressing of the record sell out. BBC Radio 1′s Introducing…in Scotland made the record its Album of the Month in the run up to its release, and BBC Radio Scotland DJs Vic Galloway and Tom Morton bestowed upon it their respective Album of the Week accolades. Fence re-released Shouting at Wildlife in 2011, in a year that saw Kid Canaveral tour constantly in the UK and USA with festival appearances at T in the Park, South by Southwest (SXSW), BelladrumgoNorth, The EDge Festival (part of the Edinburgh Fringe Programme), Stag & Dagger, and Fence’s legendary Homegame, to name but a few. The band rounded off their busiest year to date with a tour and co-penned single with the Mercury Nominated/Fence founder King Creosote, with the Kids acting as both support group and backing band to the hirsute monarch of Crail.

“Packed with sing-along melodies, frisky jangles and a real sense of purpose. A jubilant and skilful racket.” – The List **** (4 stars)
“Shouting At Wildlife is a thrilling, uplifting and generally all-round spiffing combination of indie-pop skills, lyrical wit, and choruses sung through smiles.” – The Skinny **** (4 stars)
“Guitars so choppy you shouldn’t put them near wood, and melodies so lush you could sell them as soap…Recent internet only single ‘Good Morning’ suggests July’s album ‘Shouting At Wildlife’ will be a storming affirmation of genius.” – The Metro

Self-confessed workaholics, the band immediately sprang back into action following the winding up of their promotion of Shouting… with their second, sold-out Christmas Baubles show in Edinburgh, by writing and recording their second album Now That You are a Dancer in the first half of 2012. The Canaverals also managed to fit a short tour of France, numerous UK dates, sets at Long Division, Camden Crawl, Eye O’ The Dug, Glasgow International Festival of Visual Arts, Away Game, and a tour of the USA and Canada into 2012. The first single to be taken from their sophomore (sorry) LP was Low Winter Sun, released on 17th December 2012 on Fence Records. The band wrapped up 2012 with David’s solo appearances at Robin Ince’s Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London, and Christmas Baubles III, the bands third sold-out yuletide mini-festival, in Edinburgh. Now That You are a Dancer is out on Fence Records on LP, CD and Digital Download on March 4th 2013.

More Praise, and all that sort of thing
“‘Low Winter Sun’  is…glorious, bright and life-affirming” – The List
‘Low Winter Sun’ is a mini-epic. A real statement of intent from the group, it’s one of the compact, addictive and complete things Kid Canaveral have put their name to- Clash Magazine
“Low Winter Sun’ dives headfirst into mainstream waters, the strength of this is enough to battle against the synthetic pop crap that is washing over radio right now. Kid Canaveral have a real shot atbecoming one of pop’s great anthem-creators. – Glasgow PodcArt
“Kid Canaveral showcase a sound too big to be Scotland’s secret for much longer” – The Fly
“Juicy, chewy pop-kids to savour, proving that life still twitches in this indie guitar-pop business.”- The Scotsman
“Superb…Kid Canaveral threatened to upstage the headliners – and possibly did in the eyes of many people.” – Artrocker Magazine
Picking out the best songs is a bit like trying to pick your favourite child: impossible.” - Daily Record
“Kid Canaveral are rightly loved for their ebullient melodies, and upbeat favourites like ‘Couldn’t Dance’ and ‘Good Morning’ enjoyed a further celebratory resonance in a week that saw the band announce their record deal with
Fence Records. Fence will no doubt be equally jubilant: they’ve bagged a major talent in David MacGregor. His soaring vocals and knack for a ballad would give any number of independent stadium rockers a run for their money: jaw-dropping opener ‘Her Hair Hangs Down’ was beautiful; and ‘Stretching the Line’ provided an equally hair-raising chorale.” – The List (Live Review)
